HOME KIMO's RUMS SO. MAUI WEST MAUI OAHU
PAIA/HANA UPCOUNTRY KAUAI BIG ISLAND CENTRAL MAUI

Haleakala Distillers is the only licensed distillery now operating on Maui, or anywhere in Hawai'i for that matter. It is a small family business owned and operated by Maui kama'aina. The company is dedicated to making the finest rums in the world. Quantities are not important, only quality. You will notice that our bottles and labels are simple and functional. We put the emphasis on the bottle's contents, not its appearance. You will also notice our complete lack of expensive advertising and public relations activities. To us, this kind of expenditure would be a fraud perpetrated on our customers. We feel we owe the customer the respect to apply our resources to the rum they will be drinking, as opposed to big splashy campaigns which would gratify our own egos. For similar reasons, the company employs no attorneys, CPA's or consultants. Why have a bunch of "suits" sucking resources out of the company when they have no impact whatsoever on its actual products? We like to keep things simple, putting all our resources into the rum that goes into our bottles. We hope you will find it to your liking and tell your friends about it. Aloha!

OUR CAUSES

Haleakala Distillers was founded with the aim of making a substantial contribution to the well-being of Maui and its kama'aina ("people of the land" in Hawai'ian). We do this in several ways. One is by employing people in skilled jobs at good rates of pay. We are also taxpayers. Another is by supporting non-profit organizations doing work which benefits our island. For this reason, we make regular donations to the following:

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (WWW.MADDHAWAII.ORG)

Aloha House

Save the Hui (Successful campaign to save a public arts center from being lost forever to the forces of evil); see news story at:

Seabury Hall School

Pacific Whale Foundation; Youth Education Support

Carden School, Upcountry Maui, Scholarship Fund

Manao Radio, Maui's Fantastic Volunteer station at 91.5 FM You can listen over internet at www.manaoradio.com

Women Helping Women- Maui's antidote to the problems of domestic violence which afflict even those of us living in paradise.

Haleakala Waldorf School, Kula

Kimo invites you to join him in supporting these outstanding organizations. We may be a small company, but we believe that there is strength in numbers. If enough of us small contributors get behind some of these causes we can make big things happen on Maui!

Ask yourself, when was the last time one of the imported rum suppliers did anything for the Maui community? Never! And that's when Mauians and concerned visitors should buy imported rum- NEVER! Help the community. Buy Maui!

Who is Braddah Kimo?

Braddah Kimo is the creative inspiration for Maui's only homegrown rums. Like all Hawaiians, his ancestors were seafaring people, and he carries on the family tradition. Sailors and surfers share the same appreciation for fine rum, maybe because after a hard day on the ocean everybody needs to relax and unwind. Although shy by nature, nobody loves a good party better than Braddah Kimo, especially when he is with family and friends. For him, no party is complete without rum and the music of Braddah Iz.

Braddah Kimo lives high on the slopes of Haleakala in a little house overlooking the sea and part of the legendary Haleakala Ranch. That view of the sea is important, because every morning Braddah Kimo checks out the waves to see where to surf that day. If the surf is good, he surfs. When surfing is not so good, he stays Upcountry and works in his little distillery on the edge of Haleakala Ranch, handcrafting rum with care and aloha. Every bottle passes through his hands, and he personally samples every small batch prior to releasing it to the bottling process. Sometimes he samples a little too much and needs some help getting from the distillery to his house. His friends don't seem to mind helping out with this occasional task, however, as they are often rewarded with a bottle of rum.

Although he may not be the most educated person in Hawaii, Braddah Kimo has accumulated the essential skills needed for distilling over a long career. Besides tasting rum (with which he has maybe too much experience), Braddah Kimo is a skilled carpenter, plumber and electrician. Not trusting the equipment coming from the mainland or abroad, he built the entire distillery plant personally. It took a long time, but it works exactly as he intended and when something breaks, no long wait for parts or service from the mainland. Although never needed in his own distillery, Braddah Kimo is a professionaly trained firefighter who pitches in occasionally as a volunteer when major brushfires overwhelm the local professional fire department.

Braddah Kimo has a small family for Hawaii, a wife, two boys and one poi dog. The boys do the yardwork outside the distillery and the poi dog sometimes stands guard. Mom helps out inside the distillery when an extra pair of hands is needed. Family life centers around the small local church, where Kimo and family go every week for worship and prayer.

There's not much more to say about Kimo. He is justifiably proud of his rum and hopes you enjoy it. He strongly urges you to limit your consumption to a shot or two a day, never more. If you're pregnant, wait until after the baby comes. If you are driving, better not to drink at all. If you are under 21, wait a few years. Most important, live Aloha and love your fellow man.

Braddah Kimo has his own myspace.com page, where fellow rum enthusiasts can gather online to discuss the latest in distillation, fermentation, aging, whatever strikes their fancy:
